BEST of 2001
Art Of Flying: “An Eye Full of Lamp” (2001Discobolos); This collective of about six or so folks from Questa NM, contains most of the members of Lords of Howling. An amazing octet that combined soulful songs, psychedelic drifting, expansive improvisation and a dose of Beefheart angularity. The bulk of the group return here with an astounding collection of songs, drawing off the above mentioned taps, in a engrossing world as arid and deso- late as the place from where they come. This band is fusing disparate elements into a convincing whole. Their exploratory sojourn are matched in sincerity by their heartfelt songwriting.
BEST of 2001 -earshot jazz
'atmospheric, voraciously eclectic, momentarily Floydian or Beefheartesque & thoroughly brilliant. Poetry abounds in the gems of this collection. Check out Mimicry: "I alone have compassed the circuit of heaven/ rode the big bulls & birthed the sea/ sewn wings & sails & ladders/ o little me." AoF's David Costanza & Anne Speroni have been making music together for 20 years. They used to be the Lords of Howling & continue to work with members of Camper Van Beethoven in DENT, Now based in New Mexico where they still type on typewriters..."
