Art of Flying is woven around the songs of David & Anne Costanza, formerly of the 80s LA improv band The Whitefronts, and more recently the New-Mexico-based eldritch folk Lords of Howling. Since 1997 they have recorded five CDs on Discobolus records & one 10" record (released by Cochon records) at their home studio in Questa, NM. The core of the band includes Dave on Guitar, Piano and Vocals, Anne on Bass and Vocals, drummer Peter Halter (also from LOH, and the Front Range Improv Orchestra), and guitarist Larry Yes.
Recent Comparisons (disregarding the usual Dylan/Waits references) have included Ida, Freakwater, Neutral Milk Hotel, Giant Sand, Holy Modal Rounders, Yo La Tengo, The Magic Band, the Incredible String Band, and Guided by Voices. It might be just as instructive to visualize the kind of music that would be made if Yeats, Cafavy, James Merrill, and Emily Dickinson found themselves together in a cottage full of guitars, pianos, horns and digital delay units. Could happen.
Previous tours have brought them to the West and Northwest (where they played with Rollerball and Six Foot Sloth), and to Holland, Italy and Switzerland. In Fall 2007 Art of Flying will go into the studio to work on their 6th CD.
